Summarise the weekly programme schedule – who are the main presenters? - what are the dominant genres of programming? Give examples.
This is the schedule is as follows:
05:00 Mike Wyer – Music and Chat
06:00 Howard Bentham – Best start to the day news, sport traffic and travel.
09:00 Tony Fisher – Your show, your life! (Chat)
12:00 Andrew Easton – News, Sport, Traffic and Travel.
15:00 Keith Gooden – News, Sport, Traffic and Travel
18:00 Mike George’s Music – Including Soul Hour
21:00 Rob Underwood – With the late show
00:00 BBC Radio 5 Live takes over.
Till it starts up again, this is an usual weekday schedule.
Summarise music policy – what are the dominant genres of music? Give examples.
There’s a mix of different music from modern hits and old 70’s 80’s 90’s classics. For example through whole of the shows, there is more modern music than I expected. For example, Mike Wyer show is a mix of the old hits and modern hits but with a mix of entertainment chat, lifestyle, leisure and more.
What is the balance of speech to music?
Within each show there is a mix of music and chat, however in some certain shows the balance is more focused on speech than music. The speech my not always be interacting chat with the public it might just be informing public of the news and sport etc. For example Andrew Easton is more focused on current affairs and news and sport latest traffic travel news.
What is the balance of live to pre-recorded material?
From what I’ve notices the mix is more focused on live recordings however, this is not always clear to the listener. But also the main parts of the pre-recorded clips are usually in the news and sport built tins.
How does the station promote itself?
The station dose have it’s own identity within the show so when you listing to the station it will tell you what you listing to and what’s on. Also BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester have a user friendly website which list the latest news, sport, live traffic and travel and lists of the schedules.
On the basis of what you’ve heard, what sort of audience is listening?
In my opinion BBC Hereford and Worcester audience would be of the older generation this is think is because of the mix of old and new music but also because of the domination of other more young and popular stations e.g. like Radio 1. Also having older music attracts older audiences, but also to me it just seems like an older person’s station because one reason is the presenters seem to be older and talk about older more serious topics.
How does the station serve the BBC’s “Public Service” mission – refer to website as well as programmes.
Analyse balance and coverage of news via listening & website – what is the ratio of local to national news?
The balance is quite good and informative because there is news, sport and weather on the hour, every hour with traffic and travel news according every twenty minutes. The balance of the local and national news is usually focuses on the local Hereford and Worcester news. However, for example the US presidential election has got quite a good bit of coverage. Also the website is quite an up-to-date website, regularly updated with the latest news and sport, also with live traffic and travel news.
It is very hard to compare Wyvem FM with BBC Hereford and Worcester because the target audience and format of the two radio stations are completely different. This is because Wyvem FM is a commercial radio station which means that it has advertisements which create breaks in between the songs, also Wyvem FM has an audience that are mostly interested in modern music, with showbiz, light entertainment news, also focusing on a younger audience. In addition; Wyvem FM doesn’t always have presenters just music playing with just the station jingle in between the adverts and the songs, this usually happens during the evening schedule normally after 1:00am.

Very useful work, Leo, and a good basis for our meeting with the BBC H&W reporter next week. Some extra points to consider:
How do the station IDs and presenter jingles brand the station?
How much of the content is live from the studio, how much is "crafted" speech ( edited as a package), how much is OB ( live outside broadcast)
Develop the habit of making your examples as specific as possible e.g.
"BBC H & W's new values agenda prioritises local news over international stories. On the
day of the US Presidential Election
the lead item on the 4 pm news was the resignation of RNC's Principal..."
